Headsets, targets and shift rotas
Contact centre work means handling calls, live chats and emails, often with call times, quality scores and sales targets on a screen in front of you. Many centres run evening, weekend or night shifts. Customers can be frustrated or rude, and staying calm call after call takes effort.
The job is safe physically, but it can wear down mental health over time. Sitting at a screen with a headset for a full shift can cause neck, back and wrist problems, and some people develop voice strain or hearing discomfort. Income protection pays a monthly benefit if illness or injury stops you working after your deferred period.
What a contact centre employer pays when you are ill
Some large contact centres offer company sick pay for a set number of weeks once you have passed probation. Many pay statutory sick pay, a flat weekly amount that runs for a limited time and is usually well below normal wages. Agency staff often get only the statutory minimum.
If you have little sick pay and few savings, a shorter deferred period may suit. If you get company sick pay, match the deferred period to it to save on premiums.
- Check your sick pay in your contract
- Note how long company sick pay lasts
- Choose a deferred period that fills the gap
Keeping the premium manageable
Contact centre wages are often modest, so cost matters. You can insure just your rent or mortgage and essential bills rather than your full pay. A limited payment period, such as two years per claim, also brings the price down and still covers most long absences.
Cheaper policies sometimes use a weaker definition of incapacity. These can still be useful, but read the details before choosing on price alone.
Occupation groups for contact centre roles
Insurers place every job in a risk group. Contact centre work usually sits in a lower-risk group, which helps keep premiums affordable. Many insurers offer own occupation cover for the role, so a claim is judged on whether you can do your job.
Shift work on its own does not usually change the rating. Insurers care more about your duties and your health.
Life cover and how we help contact centre staff
If you have children or a partner who relies on your income, life insurance can pay off debts or provide an income. Some large employers offer death in service, but it ends when you leave.
We compare the insurers on our panel, find cover that suits your budget and help you fill in the forms. There is no fee for our advice on personal protection.
