Short-term income protection: a monthly income for a set period

Short-term income protection pays you a monthly income if illness or injury stops you working, but each claim is limited to a set period, commonly one, two or five years. It costs less than long-term cover that pays until retirement. It handles most everyday absences well. The risk is a long illness that outlasts the payment period.

How a capped benefit period works

Like any income protection, the policy pays a share of your earnings each month once a waiting period, called the deferred period, has passed. The difference is the cap. Each claim can only pay for the benefit period you picked, after which payments stop even if you have not recovered.

If you go back to work and later fall ill again, you can usually claim again, subject to the policy rules. The cap applies to each claim, not to the life of the policy.

Why people choose it

The main draw is cost. Because the insurer is not on the hook until your retirement, premiums are lower. For someone on a tight budget, a short-term policy can be the difference between some cover and none.

Most time off work for illness or injury is measured in weeks or months, not years. A broken bone, an operation and recovery, or a spell of stress often fall well within a one or two year limit.

  • Younger workers starting out on a limited budget
  • Anyone wanting cover for common absences at a lower cost

The trade-off to weigh

Serious conditions can keep people off work for many years. A short-term policy would stop paying while you still need the money. Long-term income protection, which pays until you return to work or reach the end of the policy, covers that risk at a higher price.

Some people choose a long benefit period with a longer deferred period to keep the cost down. Others pick short-term cover now and plan to upgrade when their income grows. We can show both side by side.

Deferred period and definitions still matter

Your deferred period should match the support you have, such as employer sick pay or savings. Shorter waits cost more. Also check how the policy defines being unable to work. Some short-term plans use your own job as the test, while others use a broader definition that can make claims harder. We compare those details, not just the price.

Questions people ask us

What is the difference between short-term and long-term income protection?

Short-term income protection pays each claim for a limited period, often one, two or five years. Long-term income protection can pay until you return to work, retire or the policy ends, however long that takes. Short-term cover costs less, while long-term cover protects you against illnesses that last for years.

Is short-term income protection worth it?

It can be good value if you want cover for the most common absences at a lower price, especially if you have no sick pay. It leaves a gap if a serious illness keeps you off work beyond the benefit period. Comparing both types for your budget helps you decide.

Can I claim more than once on a short-term policy?

Usually yes. The benefit period limits each claim rather than the whole policy, so after you recover and return to work you can normally claim again for a new illness or injury. Some policies have rules about related conditions recurring soon after a claim, so check the wording.

Is short-term income protection the same as payment protection?

Not quite. Payment protection policies are often tied to a loan or mortgage payment and may include unemployment cover. Short-term income protection replaces part of your earnings after illness or injury and is not linked to a debt. Features vary, so read what each policy covers.
