Miles on your feet every shift
Carrying plates, trays and drinks across a busy floor puts strain on wrists, shoulders and lower back. Sprained ankles and knee pain are familiar to anyone who has worked a double. Burns from hot plates and cuts from broken glass happen as well.
Most of these injuries heal, but a few weeks off can wipe out the tips you rely on. Income protection is there to cover that kind of gap.
Tips, service charge and proof of income
Your take-home pay might be half wages and half tips. Insurers will only insure what they can see on payslips or HMRC records. Service charge shared through a tronc and taxed through payroll usually counts. Cash handed to you at the table and never declared does not.
Keeping your tips on the books may feel like a cost today, but it raises the income you can protect.
- Gather payslips covering at least the last year
- Include tronc payments that appear on your payslip
- Self-employed agency waiters can use self-assessment returns
Seasonal and part-time patterns
Many waiting staff work longer in summer or over Christmas and less in the quiet months. An insurer can still cover you if your yearly earnings follow a steady pattern. Some set a minimum number of weekly hours, so check before applying.
Insurers group jobs into risk classes. Waiting tables is usually seen as light manual work. That affects price and whether a claim is judged against your own job or any job you could do.
Life cover if you have a family
Waiting staff often juggle work with childcare, study or a second job. If someone at home depends on what you bring in, life insurance pays them a lump sum or a monthly income if you die during the policy. You choose the length of the policy, often matching it to when your youngest child will finish education.
Life insurance prices depend on your age, health, smoking status and the amount of cover, not on whether you earn tips. Younger applicants tend to pay less because the chance of a claim is lower. Writing the policy in trust can mean the payout goes to the right people sooner and may keep it outside your estate for inheritance tax.
