Fit to operate, by your employer's standards
Most warehouses ask you to complete recognised training before you are authorised to drive a counterbalance, reach truck or order picker, and they refresh it every few years. Employers also have a duty to make sure operators are medically fit, and many follow standards similar to those for road driving.
That means a seizure, a blackout, poor eyesight or medication that causes drowsiness can see you taken off the trucks. If no other work is available on your shift, your pay may drop to statutory sick pay or stop if you are on a zero-hours agency contract.
Hazards on the warehouse floor
Forklifts are heavy, and accidents around them can be serious. Trucks tip on uneven ground or when loads are lifted too high, pedestrians get struck, and operators trap feet or hands while loading. Even without a crash, constant twisting to look behind you strains your neck and lower back.
Many forklift drivers also pick orders, load trailers and wrap pallets by hand during quieter spells. That manual work adds to the wear on shoulders and knees over the years, and insurers will want to know roughly how your time splits between driving and handling.
- Back and neck strain from turning to reverse
- Foot and hand injuries during loading
- Truck overturns and collisions
- Slips on wet or icy yard surfaces
Agency shifts and the sick pay gap
A lot of warehouse work runs through agencies, especially at peak times. Agency workers can qualify for statutory sick pay if they meet the earnings and other conditions, but it is a flat weekly amount that is far below most people's wages. Directly employed drivers at larger distribution centres sometimes get company sick pay for a limited time.
Check your contract or ask the agency. If you would get only statutory sick pay, a short deferred period, such as four weeks, means income protection starts paying before your savings run out. If you have a few months of company sick pay, a longer wait will cost less.
Life insurance on a warehouse wage
Life insurance does not need to be expensive to be useful. Even a modest policy can clear a mortgage, pay off a car loan or give your partner breathing space to adjust. Decreasing cover that tracks a repayment mortgage is often among the lower-cost options.
Some larger employers include death in service, but agency staff rarely qualify for it. If you move between sites or agencies as contracts come and go, a personal policy keeps your family protected through each change, with the same cover and the same premium.
How Hi Tomorrow can help forklift operators
We look at your contract, your shifts and your budget, then compare income protection and life cover from UK insurers. Insurers place warehouse and forklift work in an occupation class that affects price and the definition used at claim time. Some judge you against your own job, others ask whether you could do suitable alternative work, and we make that difference clear.
If your budget is tight, we can show you shorter payment terms that still protect your rent or mortgage through a typical injury. You will see the trade-offs side by side before you choose. Terms always rest on the insurer's underwriting.
